In a press talk Andreas Wimmer, CEO and Scientific Director of the LEC, emphasized that combustion engines outperform electrical engines in the distances that can be covered even though they are lighter. The research aim of the LEC is to make large engines more environmentally friendly, more efficient, as well as more robust. In the last 25 years alone the peak values of efficiency have risen to 127 percent compared to when Prof. Wimmer began his career. Combustion engines will remain relevant in the production of energy, because they are able to even out the fluctuations created in the power grid by solar or wind power stations far better and faster than a turbine.
