Shipping is responsible for roughly 80 percent of all kilometres covered worldwide for the transportation of freight. The prevailing majority of these ships are still fuelled with heavy oil. The Emma Maersk, one of the largest container ships of the world, accounts for the same level of annual emissions as a middle-sized coal fired power plant.

The leader for environmentally friendly alternatives is the Large Engines Competence Center (LEC) in Graz, Austria’s leading research institution for large engine technology. The goal of the EU-wide innovation and research project HyMethShip is a drastic reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime sector and a simultaneous efficiency increase of 45 percent.
