Through an internship at the Large Engines Competence Center (LEC GmbH), Austria’s leading research institution in the area of large engine technologies, four 17-year-old students are taking advantage of the opportunity to become acquainted with the unknown world of large engines – and exploring an option for their future education and career path.

An interest in technical careers is most likely to develop when authentic experiences of a day in the life of a researcher are available early on. That is why we at the LEC are happy to give secondary students this opportunity. The Austrian Research Promotion Agency’s internship program for secondary school students provides optimal support.  -Andreas Wimmer, CEO of LEC GmbH.

The interns have the chance to compare measuring techniques on different test beds, analyze high-speed camera images, optimize exhaust analyses or provide assistance in the area of marketing and public relations. The photos and interviews below provide a glimpse into a day in the life of interns Marah, Leon, Marie and Christian.

Name: Leon Stosch

School: Sacre Coeur Gymnasium, Graz

Area: Test Bed LEC

What are your assignments at the LEC?

To optimize the emission analysis of the test beds and to solve the problem with the high-precision scale. Marah and I compared the different measurement techniques of the individual test beds so that a standardized system can be created.

What reference do you have to engine technology?

Until now not much.

In what ways do you have to do with engine technology in your daily live?

Small things here and there from time to time, for example for the driver’s license.

Had you heard about large engines before your internship at the LEC? Which image did you have of them?

Yes, my father told me quite a bit about them since I was little. Because of that I had quite a clear image already.

Has that image become clearer over the last few weeks or has it changed? In what ways?

Yes, I experienced how a technological company is run on a day-to-day basis.

Which insights into the LEC have you gained during your internship so far?

I gained insight into the research being done on large engines.

Do you have any career plans or ideas about what you would like to do in the future?

No, I don’t have any concrete plans yet.

Name: Marie Springer

School: Graz International Bilingual School (GIBS)

Area: Marketing & PR

What are your assignments at the LEC?

I wrote news articles about conferences, publications, and awards. The texts will be published on the LEC website in German and English. I also helped with a number of other small tasks.

What reference do you have to engine technology?

Until now not much, to be honest.

In what ways do you have to do with engine technology in your daily live?

For the most part not a lot. Two years ago I took part in a technology competition for girls in which I got into the last round and won a prize.

Had you heard about large engines before your internship at the LEC? Which image did you have of them?

No, I hadn’t. Before I came here I couldn’t imagine them very well, especially in what ways they are used. I just imagined them as larger versions of car engines.

Has that image become clearer over the last few weeks or has it changed? In what ways?

Yes, I have a clearer image now, also because I read about them before I wrote the articles.

Which insights into the LEC have you gained during your internship so far?

I gained insight into the media work and marketing, which is something that I am very interested in. But because I didn’t come in close contact with the test beds, I know a little less about them.

Do you have any career plans or ideas about what you would like to do in the future?

I would like to do a gap year and then study law. That could well be combined with Marketing.

Name: Marah Lichtblau

School: Rainergymnasium, Wien

Area: Test Bed LEC

What are your assignments at the LEC?

I optimize the emission analysis of the test beds and try to find a solution for the issue with the high-precision scale. Together with Leon I asked the employees at the test beds how they measure data. Then we will have to come up with a standardized System, because each of them does it a little differently.

What reference do you have to engine technology?

Until now I had rather little reference.

In what ways do you have to do with engine technology in your daily live?

Usually not a lot.

Had you heard about large engines before your internship at the LEC? Which image did you have of them?

Yes, I had heard about them.

Has that image become clearer over the last few weeks or has it changed? In what ways?

Yes, I learned more about technical jobs and their requirements.

Which insights into the LEC have you gained during your internship so far?

I learned more about the fascinating research areas in this line of work.

Do you have any career plans or ideas about what you would like to do in the future?

Nothing certain, maybe something that has to do with media.

Name: Christian Neumann

School: Sacre Coeur Gymnasium, Graz

Area: Ignition Test Bed LEC

What are your assignments at the LEC?

I evaluate the pictures taken by the high speed camera and interpret the results.

What reference do you have to engine technology?

I am very interested in engines, especially powerful car engines.

In what ways do you have to do with engine technology in your daily live?

Not much, but I already have my driver’s license.

Had you heard about Large Engines before your internship at the LEC? Which image did you have of them?

Yes, from Leon because we are in the same class.

Has that image become clearer over the last few weeks or has it changed? In what ways?

I only just started my internship.

Do you have any career plans or ideas about what you would like to do in the future?

Yes, I would like to study something technical, maybe something that has to do with mechanical engineering.
