Dr. Marc Klawitter at the Award Ceremony

Dr. Klawitter received the award for his dissertation “Carbon-Free Fuels for Large Engines: Flame Propagation of Ammonia and Ammonia/Hydrogen Blends,”  which explores the use of carbon-free fuels such as ammonia and hydrogen in large engines. His research provides valuable foundations for the application of alternative fuels in the energy and transport sectors.

I want my research to contribute to curbing climate change. The use of green eFuels – such as ammonia or hydrogen – holds enormous potential for CO₂ reduction in the large engine sector. I’m especially pleased that the first ammonia-powered tankers could already set sail within the next one to two years”, said the award winner.

About the eFuels Young Scientist Award

The eFuels Award is presented annually at the international expert conference eKKon – Climate Protection through Fuels in Vienna. The goal is to highlight outstanding scientific achievements and to support young talents in the fields of energy technology, sustainable mobility, and climate protection.

In the third edition of the award, a total of eleven young researchers were honored. Dr. Klawitter received one of the main prizes in the dissertation category. The prize money totaling €15,000 was donated by companies and associations from the energy and mobility sectors.

Young Talents in the Spotlight

Jürgen Roth, President of the eFuel Alliance Austria and organizer of the conference, emphasized the importance of the next generation of scientists:

We need the best minds and bold ideas to successfully drive the energy transition. The award winners show that scientific excellence and practical relevance go hand in hand”.

Helmut Eichlseder, scientific director of the award, also praised the high quality of the submitted works and expressed confidence that the awardees will play a significant role in advancing sustainable eFuel technologies in the future..
