The inner surfaces of cylinder liners act as running and sealing surfaces for pistons and piston rings. Thus, cylinder liners are critical to the faultless operation of a large engine. Their surface is formed into a fine plateau structure in a process called plateau honing. Plateau honing minimizes friction and ensures optimal oil retention in defined deep grooves.

Currently, the precise optical evaluation of the actual wear condition of the liner surface is a complex, time-consuming, destructive and costly process. In order to simplify this process, LEC researchers together with colleagues from University of Innsbruck and from INNIO Jenbacher have developed a method to evaluate running surfaces based on a simple handheld microscope, whose images are enhanced with deep learning methods. The results show that it may be possible to sustainably simplify the condition monitoring of cylinder liners in the future and to end reliance on destructive methods.
